Chapter Fifteen

John’s fear that Benji would dart away from him upon waking didn’t come to fruition.

Benji stretched and did something very close to purring before he yawned so big his jaw popped. “Ow,” he mumbled, opening his eyes. “You’re still here.”

John was tempted to say the same thing, but didn’t think he could get it out without sounding relieved that Benji hadn’t hauled ass. He didn’t want Benji to know how much he had begun worrying already that Benji would back out on giving their relationship a shot.

“I was wondering if you’d like a midnight snack.” John’s rumbling stomach had woken him up. Work tomorrow would be fun, with him being awake now, but that was okay. He had Benji here.

“I am kinda hungry,” Benji admitted. He rolled over and rubbed his eyes. “Man, what time is it? Is it really midnight?”

“Yeah, it’s a quarter after, actually.” John sat up and swung his legs around until he had his feet on the floor. “Grilled cheese okay?”

“Aw, God, that sounds soooooooo good! How do you make them?” Benji bounced somehow—John was sitting on the bed and he was jostled as Benji made his way to sit beside him. “You don’t use mayo or anything disgusting like that do you?”

“Ack, no. That’s blasphemy.” John mock-shuddered. “Butter, the real kind, and two slices of cheese, American and Swiss or provolone, your choice.”

Benji scrunched up his face and poked his bottom lip out. “I can’t have all three?”

“You can have anything you want,” John said quietly, meaning it in every way.

Benji stopped pouting and looked at him with so much surprise, and something else, something John thought might be longing. “Two is just fine, your choice,” Benji replied just as softly, and John wondered if he was reading more into the offer than Benji intended. He didn’t think so. Benji was reaffirming his earlier desire to have a relationship with John.

“Okay then. I’ll make us both one of each kind.” John took a quick peck on the lips and stood. “You can shower if you want, or go back to sleep—whatever, make yourself comfortable.”

“Shower sounds great.” Benji’s voice cracked on the last word and John looked back at him. Benji held his hands up. “What? You’ve got a fine ass. Keep walking that way.”

John felt himself blush, and a check of his chest showed it to be blotchy pink. He headed for his sweats.

“Don’t get dressed on my account,” Benji told him.

John snickered and picked up his favourite pair. “I’d rather not burn anything important.”

“That would be a shame.”

“You can borrow some pants or PJ’s if you want. They’re in the second drawer.” John pulled his pair on, trying not to laugh as Benji whistled and harassed him. Once he was covered, Benji gave an exaggerated groan of disappointment then told him to go be a good boy and cook. John flipped him off.

“Later, if you’re up to it.”

John was sure Benji didn’t mean it as a dig, but whether or not he could get hard was a sensitive subject for John just then.
